Introduction:
About Minster FM
Born on the 4th of July 1992, Minster FM has been broadcasting to the people of York and its surrounding districts for over fifteen years. The station was launched under the stewardship of prominent local radio professionals and under the chairpersonship of Local and National TV celebrity the late Richard Whiteley.
Over time Minster FM has woven itself into the very fabric of society, proving to be the first choice for the many diverse communities of the area. This is not just because of the great music that is played but most importantly because of the quality and the credibility of the news output. Add this to the local knowledge that the Minster FM presenters demonstrate while broadcasting and you have the perfect mix for a perfect local radio station. Over the years the audience has grown with the station proving the belief, trust and respect they have for the station’s output.
This document will demonstrate Minster FM’s continuing commitment to deliver quality local radio to the people of the York and the surrounding area and highlights how you may contact the station if you feel there is something that we should be talking about or indeed if there is something you are dissatisfied with.
David Green Programme Controller – 104.7 Minster FM
1. What is the Public File?
Each local commercial radio station in the UK has requirements in respect of its music and local content, such as news etc. These requirements are set out in the station "Format", a document issued by Ofcom, the UK media regulator.
The Public File contains details of elements Ofcom regulate over, such as music tracks, local news etc. It is intended to give you a better understanding of our output and what we are doing for the community we serve.
The Public File is available as a print out on request. Any comments on the file can be made to us or Ofcom.

6. Automation and Local Programming
Sometimes it is necessary to pre-record (sometimes called Automation) programmes on the station. Minster FM provides one hour of automated programming, Monday to Friday (2-3pm), five hours overnight. We also record our weekend breakfast programme on a Saturday and Sunday between 6am and 8am.
Some of our programmes are networked from off site. However on average at least 18 hours a day are broadcast from our premises.
7. Events and Charities we support
Easter Egg Tree
For three whole weeks on the run up to Easter 2007, Minster FM encouraged listeners to buy an extra Easter egg for those children less fortunate who may not receive one this Easter. They were then asked to drop it at Sainsbury’s Monks Cross, Tadcaster or Foss Bank stores. The Minster FM promotional team went out and about delivering the Easter Eggs to York’s Family Centres, Churches, Charities, Children’s Refuge’s and North Yorkshire County Council’s Social Services department. Literally hundreds of eggs were collected and hundreds of North Yorkshire’s children were delighted! We also received a huge donation of several hundred eggs from York based Nestle.
Race For Life
In 2007, Minster FM encouraged women in the county to Race for Life! Listeners were encouraged to enrol in the 2 races taking part on York’s Knavesmire and raise money for Cancer Research UK. Members of the team also took place in the race.
Yorkshire Air Ambulance
In January 2007 we launched a campaign to recycle old mobile phones into cash for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. We received hundreds of old mobiles and helped fund the purchase of a second helicopter.
Macmillan Cancer Support
We provided airtime to organisers of events for the World’s Biggest Coffee morning to publicise their events in Autumn 2007.
Minster FM Action
Minster FM action provides free airtime to voluntary or charity organisations to publicise their cause. Recent beneficiaries include:-
Woodland’s Charity Shop
Selby Dogs for the Blind
Nestle Trust (a charity arm of Nestle)
8. Coverage Highlights
Haunted at Halloween
On 31st October 2007 Minster FM broadcast a six hour broadcast marathon from Clifford’s Tower, a historic site in the centre of York. This truly interactive programme took the form of a live ghost hunt with spirit mediums, sceptics and scientists from 7pm until 1am. This was a speech heavy programme and demonstrated the station’s commitment to produce quality local content which listeners can interact and involve themselves with.
Minster FM Local Hero Awards
Each year Minster FM encourages people in the county to vote for the ‘heroes’ of North Yorkshire…and give recognition to those who, for whatever reason have gone the extra mile for someone else. In 2007 listeners were encouraged to send their nominations and stories and at the end of January, three nominees were named for each award. All nominees, guests and sponsors were then invited to a glittering Awards ceremony with live music in February 2007, hosted by Minster FM. Aside from the recognition each local hero winner received for their particular set of circumstances, £200 was donated to their chosen charity, all thanks to the businesses that generously sponsored the awards evening.
Selby Game Fair
On Good Friday we broadcast our mid-morning show from Carlton Towers for the Selby Game Fair. This event attracts over 10,000 visitors from across the Yorkshire region and beyond. We took part in various activities such as Army rock climbing training and monster truck driving. We spoke to event organisers and participants, including the "Knights of the Damned," a medieval re-enactment group and interviewed those raising money for local charities at the event. The show was broadcast live from various points around the event including the main arena where we also gave out goodie bags and spoke to many members of the public who were enjoying the event.
